Mehreen Jabbar

A wife plans to catch her husband and his mistress red-handed at her home but all hell breaks loose when the two ladies arrive together and find the said man dead in the kitchen. That’s the plot of Mehreen Jabbar’s new short film Baira Gharakh on See Prime.

Featuring Yasra Rizvi (Aqsa) as the wife, Khalid Malik (Asim) as the husband and Hajra Yamin (Masooma) as the other woman, the short uses dark comedy to analyze complexities of marriage and relationships. The comedic premise is entertaining and is surrounded by mystery of a whodunit as well.

Mehreen Jabbar

Shot for the most part inside a house, the characters played by Yasra and Hajra continue to argue, deflect responsibility and empathize with each other during the 16-minute drama. There are also subliminal messages about the uncertainty even in a decade old marriage.

“15 years of marriage and suddenly my husband is dead. My cheater, fraud and liar husband has been murdered by someone and I will be facing the allegations now,” Aqsa says as her husband lies flat on his stomach with a knife and nearby.

Baira Gharakh

Yasra presents both sides of Aqsa very well; she is a strong-headed wife who was adamant to take revenge and also a smart woman who doesn’t want to suffer due to her cheating husband’s murder. Hajra, on the other hand, wears flashy clothes but is very malleable. Interestingly, despite being enemies, the two women try to help out each other because they are both in a mess due to a unfaithful man. But is it actually a murder?

Baira Gharakh

The short is written by Shah Yasir and Mehreen has directed it in a convincing manner. The comedic and sarcastic element in the story is quite funny but you can catch the drift pretty soon if you have a keen eye. However, it is hilarious to see the chemistry between the two women as they become allies from enemies.
